student stories

One time in a friends house I met a beautiful girl and soon we talked to each other. We talked for a long time. Because she is beautiful, I said many admirable words. Then another girl who knew me said: He is always good at talking. After that the beautiful girl asked me a foolish question. I said: You are a fool. The girl went away with no word.

friendster sucks now

I've been getting my students to sign up for friendster. But it's been really uninspiring for them, because friendster is constantly broken.

The usability changes suck too. They've removed the best part of it, how it automatically shows all the connections from you to who you are looking at. Now that info is hidden a click and a long load time away. Also, now everyone on the network is viewable, but since most of them aren't closely connected enough, when you click on them nothing comes up. It was way better before when pictures of people who aren't in your network weren't linked to anything.

Also there are the regular problems, like how I can never send a message to anyone, it takes like an hour for someone to show up on the friends list, even when they show up the system claims they have no friends.

I'm disappointed, because I'd hoped to set off a chinese english student friendster signup mania. Or at least get it banned by the great firewall of china...

war

If you look at all the real wars going on right now, you come across the same two weapons, over and over: the AK-47 and the RPG-7--both Russian designs, and both older than your Dad.

They're the weapons that matter, because they're already out there, millions of units, enough to equip every guerrilla army in the world, simple enough that you can teach a peasant kid with hookworm and a room-temperature IQ to fire them, and cheap enough to buy in bulk.

A whole bunch of articles about war. Opinionated and interesting. Like "drew carey as a military buff"
