This show is
sometimes funny and sometimes awful. The Hosts are Andy and Ken
Andy: late 40s,
fat,
jewish, balding. Professional comedy writer. Really
obnoxious, dumb,
low humor. At first I thought he was actually dumb. But
after you
listen to him a while you realize that he thinks of and works a joke
into conversation about every 10 seconds. Most things he says are
just
part of his running ad lib comedy show life. When he's
interacting with random new people he is
fucking awesome. If he's talking to guys he's a jerk, if he's
talking to girls he tries to hit on them. Occasionally he says
something really, really funny. Despite all his bad
characteristics, it's amazing how appealing he is.
Ken: My
imagined version of him was totally different than what he actually
looks like. WFMU
station manager. He's liberal and seems fairly smart at first,
but not
particularly an intellectual. It's amazing how not funny
he is
compared to Andy. It's
also rather discouraging to see how generally Andy dominates Ken, even
though Andy is full of shit. If they were both politicians Andy
would
kill. It's really sad, but there's something really appealing
about
someone who's as fast on their feet as Andy.
They usually
come up with some garbage listener participation show idea. About
one
in 5 shows actually works. Even the ones that don't work
sometimes
feature incredibly funny moments. Sometimes I find myself
laughing out loud really really hard. That almost never happens
to me.
Initially I
hated Andy and liked Ken, because Andy just acts like a brat and Ken is
the station manager of my favorite station. But as I've listened
to more of them I realize that Andy's actually smarter than Ken.
Ken is really nice and kind, but isn't that well informed. The
one thing he has over
Andy is good emotional control. Ken calls Andy a narcissist, and
he's right. But Andy's so much more interesting. Ken's
clumsy and bad at everything, except for pure mechanical
intellect. Andy's a natural at something. Naturals are
purely and simply better than hardworking people, hard as that may be
to accept.
An interesting
thing about Andy is that he thinks of everything reflexively - so if
they are pranking someone and someone calls them and tries to prank
them back, andy immediately catches on. Or whenever they propose
something, instead of thinking that they thought of it first, Andy
immediately jumps to the idea that it's already being done to them.
*= don't bother
**= eh
***= worth listening
****= a classic
Ken and Andy further lower WFMU's already abysmal
standards as the program enters its death throes. Stunt radio which
subjects the radio audience to concepts and topics which mature adults
should not have to endure. Find the fatal flaw."
