The primary goal of the Audible-Amazon UI is to stop you from seeing books you already own

Any of these things will make you less likely to buy another book:

  • seeing a book you read a year ago and wanted to read again!
  • seeing a book you forgot you had started, and have never finished
  • seeing a book you haven't started yet
  • seeing any free books such as those from gutenberg
  • realizing that you can get books from friends, scan them
  • reminding you that you haven't reviewed the PDF of charts and graphs which came with the audiobook version of what you're listening to
  • realizing that its likely there are youtube interviews of the author which you could listen to right now, which would give you a great sense of their voice!

This explains a overall design: how they use weasel words like having the default tab be "listen".

Now, this sin of free markets is infinitely bad, because as customers, our overall discipline and quality of our decisions does serve as one of the only balancing factors. The more we are able to notice and punish things, the more designers will not have the guts to do things we don't like (because we'd be credible in punishing them).

Key thing to remember: Audible/Amazon HATE your current book. Your current book is the ENEMY since it's what's making you NOT buy other books.

Your LIBRARY is also their enemy.

More generally: existing product is the enemy of new purchases.

For single-brand purchasers, this changes them from trying to appeal to you with value, to making you now set up to waste as much product as possible so you buy more of it, earlier.

One of the worst things you can do is to become a single-brand purchaser, because that changes the incentive of your provider to be to maximizing the amount of the product you waste, so you'll buy more. This explains all the strange packaging and setup uses - the weird dishwashing fluid packets, same for washers and their strange cups, etc.
