It's awesome

My wife found a piano teacher, and eventually he also began teaching us both how to sing.

Who knew?

I had SO much latent, unconnected knowledge and feeling about singing! I knew scales, sort of - major and chromatic vaguely. I could sing logs of songs but had little idea about intervals.

It's SO much fun and so great to step by step fill things in! I've had a single 30m lesson, 1/week and that's plenty. To not feel too bad I end up practicing 1-2 hours through the week at reading music, singing and hearing intervals, scales, songs, etc.

The goal is to eventually maybe join a choir which seems like it'd be really fun.

I tell you, I love this. It's wonderful. Lately he's been teaching me how to access higher registers. Singing along with songs I love is totally different now! I think I subconsciously used to fake it by switching to a 1-octave-too-low voice when they'd go above my old comfortable range. But I've found a bit more room up there.

Is a great guy. He's had nearly 60 years of teaching experience so he's always ready for a lesson on any topic.

My recommendation

Everyone who likes music should pretty much get a teacher or start learning again. Also, check out my voice-wei tools which were written to have fun with and help me practice as I went along. Kind of coding-as-learning but maybe useful for some!

I hadn't known just how much I love the pure sound of barbershop music!

I hadn't known our old church hymals actually encode four singing lines for nearly ever song! All I ever knew was to try to sing the main line, and we mostly just ignored the rest! What good practice I could have been getting!

I really love buzz, throat singing, drone singing styles, rather than trills and vibrato or whatever those more curved style singing are!
